An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The Bunyip climate
In Bunyip, the climate is warm and temperate, with year round rainfall, warm to hot summers, and cool wet winters.
Bunyip's average annual precipitation is 858mm, making it slightly wetter than the nearby capital in Melbourne.
In early days in Bunyip, the main outlet for the men looking for work was in the timber industry and local splitters were fully employed having orders to keep them in work for many months. Large eucalyptus trees were selected and were then sawn with a cross cut saw into required lengths.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
While many people across our dry country relish the sight of rain, evolving weather conditions, and modern infrastructure have led to increasing cases of storm water run off and flash flooding.
If 100mm of rain fell on Bunyip in just twenty-four hours, in order to prevent two million litres of rainfall from entering stormwater systems, it would call for just 100 homes armed with rainwater tanks and appropriate guttering.
Bushfire preparation
Australia is famous around the world for its long hot summers, and excluding the uninhabitable Antarctica, is the driest continent on the planet. Pairing this with the way many Australian plants behave, much of Victoria is susceptible to large scale wildfires.
It is important in any non-urban setting to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself from bushfire. You can do this by making sure that you have a bushfire action plan, along with sufficient water storage for fire fighting purposes.
Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both domestic water storage and fire protection.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
When the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in conjunction with the CSIRO performed bushfire simulations on a variety of water tanks, a steel Pioneer Water Tank performed best.
All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose precious water, however the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30 minute fire front, which could prove important to fire fighting efforts.
While a water tank will still prove appropriate for watering gardens or lawns, if it has been exposed to fire, it is highly recommended that you get the tank water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is still safe for household use.
The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference
Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile
Designed for toughness and for the sole purpose of water storage, the Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile is also a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive.
The V-Lock wall profile is designed to put the steel where it is needed most, for the optimal strength and support, as well as protecting the tank liner, not just from external debris, but also against stretching or warping from the tank filling and emptying.
It's a design so good, it won an Australian Design Award for the superior strength and internal support, along with its aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner
Proven to prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.
The Aqualiner Fresh ® utilises Sanitized ® technology, with the antibacterial qualities of silver, within the water tank liner.
The most technically advanced, cleanest and strongest liner available on the market, this is an industry leading product, made up of five distinct layers to protect and store your water.

Bunyip Local Insight
Local knowledge
The Koo-Wee-Rup and Bunyip areas, among others, are considered to be places of importance to the Victorian Aborigines, particularly the Bunurong people of the Kulin nation, the traditional owners of the area, from whom the word Bunyeep is derived. They believe the Bunyip is a spiritual being which lives near water and preys on humans who come too near.
