After 30 minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, a critical feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partially or fully lost.

If your water tank has been subjected to fire, it is important to ensure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be suitable for purposes such as watering gardens or lawns.

Churchill Local Insight

Local knowledge

Churchill was originally to be given the name Hazelwood as per the surrounding district; however, shortly before construction began, it was announced by Lindsay Thompson that the name given was to be Churchill, in honour of former British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill, who had died earlier in the year the town's establishment was announced. 

Things to do in Churchill

The Hazelwood Cooling Pond, which can be accessed from the town along Switchback Road, unfortunately now closed to the public, is still worth a viewing.

Art installation "The Spire," quickly became dubbed 'The Big Cigar," in honour of the town's namesake, Winston Churchill's cigar.
