An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The Heyfield climate
Heyfield is located in a moderate oceanic climate zone resulting in warm summers and cool winters with low rainfall.
The average annual rainfall in Heyfield is 693 mm, with small amounts of rainfall year round, and much of it falling in the winter months.
Today, it is the principal source of hardwood in Victoria, and the largest timber mill in the Southern Hemisphere - Australian Sustainable Hardwoods - is located there.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
While many people across our dry nation relish the sight of rain, changing weather conditions, and modern infrastructure have led to increasing cases of storm water run off and flash flooding.
If Heyfield received 100mm of rain in a twenty-four hour downpour, it would require just one hundred houses to have water tanks to prevent two million litres of water from entering stormwater systems and contributing to stormwater runoff and flooding damages.
Bushfire preparation
Australia is world renowned for having long warm summers, and if you discount the obvious outlier in Antarctica, is the driest continent on the planet. This, coupled with the life cycle of many native plants, leaves much of Victoria susceptible to widespread bushfires.
It is important in any non-urban setting to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself from bushfire. You can do this by ensuring that you have a bushfire action plan, as well as sufficient water storage for fire fighting purposes.
A steel water tank can be used as both fire protection and water storage for the home, and Pioneer also provides a fire reserve option for your water tank if required.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competitors in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in collaboration with the CSIRO.
Importantly, as opposed to the other tanks - which either melted or split - the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water even after a fire front, which could prove essential to firefighting efforts.
If your water tank has been exposed to fire, it is important to ensure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be appropriate for purposes like watering gardens or lawns.
The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference
Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile
The Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile, exclusive to Pioneer Water Tanks, has been designed with the sole purpose of water storage.
This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for strength and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, protecting against stretching and wear as the tank fills and empties.
Don't just take our word for it, the design is so sound, it won an Australian Design Award for its strength and appearance.
Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner
Proven to prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.
The natural antimicrobial properties of silver and Sanitized ® technology are woven into the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner.

Heyfield Local Insight
Local knowledge
The name Heyfield came from an early settler describing the area as looking like "a field of waving corn," and was originally known as Hayfield, but was later changed, possibly to reflect the spelling of a nearby station.
In the 2011 season, there were a remarkable three premiership footballers running around in the AFL from Heyfield, in David Wojcinski (2007, 2009, 2011), Leigh Brown (2010) and Brent Macaffer (2010).
Things to do in Heyfield
Located 6 km north of Heyfield is Glenmaggie Reservoir was completed in the 1920s. The aim was to meet the demand for water created, particularly by sugar beet farmers, in the valleys below the reservoir. The water level was raised in 1947 when floodgates were built on the top of the wall. The lake can be used for boating, fishing, swimming and picnics.
The tiny village of Glenmaggie is also worth a visit, if you've already decided to head to the Reservoir for a day of activities. Maybe even stay a night or two at the Bush Camping Park.
