An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The Narbethong climate
The town of Narbethong has a warm and temperate climate, with significant year round rainfall, warm to hot summers, and cold wet winters.
Narbethong has an average annual rainfall of 1184 mm, making it one of the wetter towns in the region, with almost double the annual rainfall of the state capital.
The timber industry remains an important sector in the local economy, reflecting its proximity to the logging coups in the ranges to the east. There are two timber mills that currently operate in the area.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
In a country as dry as Australia, rain of any kind is often a refreshing sight, however modern infrastructure like roads and footpaths, along with evolving weather conditions, can often trigger flash flooding thanks to storm water run off, which can cause extensive damage.
If a 24 hour period saw a 100mm deposit of rainfall on Narbethong, it would only require one hundred homes with fitted water tanks and sufficient guttering to prevent 2 million litres of water from entering the ecosystem.
Bushfire preparation
Australia is famous across the globe for its long hot summers, and excluding the uninhabitable Antarctica, is the driest continent on the planet. Pairing this with the way many Australian plants behave, much of Victoria is prone to large scale wildfires.
Along with having a bushfire action plan, an important way to prepare for the dry summer months is to ensure that you have adequate water storage to help protect you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that protection.
So as to ensure your water tank can be used for the purposes of both household or property water storage, and fire protection, Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
A Pioneer Water Tank performed better than the competitors in bushfire simulation when testing was done by the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in partnership with the CSIRO.
Importantly, as opposed to the other tanks - which either melted or split - the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water even after a fire front, which could prove essential to firefighting efforts.
While a water tank will still prove adequate for watering gardens or lawns, if it has been exposed to fire, it is highly recommended that you get the tank water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is still safe for household use.
The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference
Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile
Designed for toughness and for the sole function of water storage, the Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile is also a Pioneer Water Tanks exclusive.
This V-Lock panel profile is designed not only for strength and durability of the tank wall itself by engineering the sheets to the ideal thickness for each panel, but also to protect the tank liner, protecting against stretching and wear as the tank fills and empties.
The design was deemed so good, in terms of structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, it won an Australian Design Award.
Aqualiner Fresh® antimicrobial water tank liner
Proven to prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.
The natural antimicrobial properties of silver and Sanitized ® technology are woven into the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner.
The most technically advanced, cleanest and strongest liner available on the market, this is an industry leading product, comprised of five distinct layers to protect and store your water.

Narbethong Local Insight
Local knowledge
The first European settlement at Narbethong was established in about 1865 by Frederick Fisher. Fisher built a 12-room hotel, the Black Spur Inn, on the road which was being built to link Melbourne with the new goldfield at Woods Point.
Fisher came from the town of Narberth in Wales, so it is likely that the name Narbethong was based on that - however, there are also claims that Narbethong is an Aboriginal word meaning cheerful, or cheerful place.
A scene in the 1959 film On the Beach was set in Narbethong. It featured the characters played by Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner spending their first night together.
Things to do in Narbethong
