An Ongoing Battle with the Elements

The Sale climate

Sale has a moderate oceanic climate, made up of warm summers, mild autumns and springs and cool winters.

The average annual rainfall in Sale is 595.9 mm, making it drier than the nearby state capital, Melbourne, with low but steady rainfall year round.

The town was a service town to local areas, including the gold rush town of Ormeo, and became an important service centre for East Gippsland and the Monaro Plains of New South Wales.

Rainwater run-off and flooding

Whilst rainfall is a welcome sight across this dry nation of ours, changing weather conditions causing heavy storms, and modern facilities such as bitumen and cement, often leads to the build-up of water and flash flooding, which can cause damage to property and the environment.

If Sale received 100mm of rain in a twenty-four hour downpour, it would require just one hundred houses to have water tanks to prevent two million litres of water from entering stormwater systems and contributing to stormwater runoff and flooding damages.

Bushfire preparation

Australia is world famous for having long scorching summers, and if you discount the obvious outlier in Antarctica, is the driest continent on the planet. This, coupled with the life cycle of many native plants, leaves much of Victoria vulnerable to widespread bushfires.

In addition to having a bushfire action plan, an important way to prepare for the dry summer months is to ensure that you have sufficient water storage to help safeguard you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that protection.

Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both household water storage and fire protection.

Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions

The CSIRO performed bushfire simulation tests on water tanks in collaboration with the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC, and the results showed that a steel Pioneer Water Tank held up better than the competition.

All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose precious water, however the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30 minute fire front, which could prove essential to fire fighting efforts.

If your water tank has been exposed to fire, it is essential to ensure that you get your water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is safe for food preparation or drinking. The water would, however, still be appropriate for purposes like watering gardens or lawns.

The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference

Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile

The Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile, exclusive to Pioneer Water Tanks, has been developed with the sole function of water storage.

The V-Lock wall profile is designed to put the steel where it is needed most, for the optimal strength and support, as well as protecting the tank liner, not just from external debris, but also against stretching or warping from the tank filling and emptying.

It's a design so good, it won an Australian Design Award for the superior strength and internal support, along with its aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner

Proven to prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.

Utilising Sanitized ® technology, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner has the antibacterial qualities of silver woven into the tank liner.

The most technologically advanced, cleanest and strongest liner available on the market, this is an industry leading product, made up of five distinct layers to protect and store your water.

Sale Local Insight

Local knowledge

The Aboriginal name for the Sale area was Wayput. When the new settlement was gazetted in 1851 it was named "Sale" as a tribute to General Sir Robert Sale, a British army officer who won fame in the first Afghan war before being killed in battle in India in 1845. An SBS TV documentary, Afghanistan: The Great Game, claims that it is actually named after his wife, Lady Florentia Sale, who wrote a famous journal of her experiences during the First Afghan War which became a best seller in the 1840s and was serialised in The Times (UK) and possibly in Australia.

Several successful V/AFL Footballers hail from the city, including current Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury, and 1941 Brownlow Medallist, and captain of the Team of the Century, Norman Ware.
