An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The Traralgon climate
Traralgon experiences an oceanic climate with warm to hot summers, and cool winters. Nights in Traralgon are typically about 2°C cooler than in Melbourne.
Traralgon typically experiences around 724mm of rainfall annually, and these rainfall is spread reasonably evenly across the months.
These conditions leant well to the production of wool and dairy products, as well as vegetable growing, which remain the primary industry in the area.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
In a country as dry as Australia, rain of any kind is often a welcome sight, however modern facilities like roadways and footpaths, along with evolving weather conditions, can often lead to flash flooding as a result of storm water run off, which can cause extensive damage.
If Traralgon received 100mm of rain in a 24 hour downpour, it would require just one hundred houses to have water tanks to prevent 2 million litres of water from entering stormwater systems and contributing to stormwater runoff and flooding damages.
Bushfire preparation
Australia is world renowned for having long warm summers, and if you discount the obvious outlier in Antarctica, is the driest continent on earth. This, coupled with the life cycle of many native plants, leaves much of Victoria vulnerable to widespread bushfires.
Along with having a bushfire action plan, an important way to prepare for the dry summer months is to ensure that you have sufficient water storage to help safeguard you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that protection.
Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both domestic water storage and fire protection.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
When the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC in conjunction with the CSIRO performed bushfire simulations on a range of water tanks, a steel Pioneer Water Tank performed best.
After 30 minutes of submersion in flame, the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water, an important feature for firefighting efforts, while the other tanks tested either melted or split, causing their water to be partly or fully lost.
While a water tank will still prove adequate for irrigating gardens or lawns, if it has been exposed to fire, it is highly recommended that you get the tank water tested as soon as possible to ensure that it is still safe for household use.
The Pioneer Water Tanks Difference
Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile
The Pioneer V-Lock ® tank wall profile, also exclusive to Pioneer Water Tanks, has been developed with the sole function of water storage.
The V-Lock wall profile is designed to put the steel where it is needed most, for the optimal strength and support, as well as protecting the tank liner, not just from external debris, but also against stretching or warping from the tank filling and emptying.
The design was deemed so good, in terms of structural integrity and visual appeal, it won an Australian Design Award.
Aqualiner Fresh ® antimicrobial water tank liner
Proven to prevent the growth of undesirable bacteria in your water tank, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner is the only antimicrobial water tank liner available on the market, and a Pioneer Water tanks exclusive.
Utilising Sanitized ® technology, the Aqualiner Fresh ® water tank liner has the antibacterial qualities of silver woven into the tank liner.
The most technically advanced, cleanest and strongest liner available on the market, this is an industry leading product, made up of five distinct layers to protect and store your water.

Traralgon Local Insight
Local knowledge
The origin of the name Traralgon is uncertain. The name is popularly believed to be derived from Gunai language words tarra meaning "river" and algon meaning "little fish". However, these words are not reflected in modern linguists' knowledge of the Gunai language, where, for example, the word for river is wun wun or wurn wurn.
Things to do in Traralgon
Remnants of the gold rush years are still reflected in the architecture of the town, so make sure to check out the Post Office, Ryans Hotel and Ostler House. The town has grown to service Victoria's energy needs, and the local surrounding agricultural, pastoral, papermaking and timber industries.
