Wonthaggi originally existed as a tent city near the site of a coal mine in the late 1800's, before finally being proclaimed a town in 1910 around the time the Wonthaggi hospital was built.

The modest town of Wonthaggi has produced two AFL premiership players, who won their premierships in back to back years, in Jarryd Blair (2010, Collingwood) and Trent West (2011, Geelong).

Things to do in Wonthaggi 

If you like a bit of mining history, visit the State Coal Mine, which offers a journey back in time to mining in the 1900's. The facility offers underground tours through the network of existing mining tunnels.

The Bunurong Marine Park features stunning beaches, sandstone cliffs, sandy coves, rocky headlands, caves and rock pinnacles, sure to please those looking to relax, and also those up for a bit of adventure.
