An Ongoing Battle with the Elements
The Yarra Glen climate
In Yarra Glen, the climate is warm and temperate, with plentiful year round rainfall, warm to hot summers, and cold wet winters.
Yarra Glen's average annual precipitation is 838 mm, making it significantly wetter than the nearby capital in Melbourne, but not as wet as some surrounding areas like Healesville.
The Yering run was established in 1837 after cattle were moved down from NSW. The the first grape vines in the Yarra Valley in were planted in 1838 and produced their first wine in 1845.
Rainwater run-off and flooding
While many people across our dry country relish the sight of rain, evolving weather conditions, and modern infrastructure have resulted in increasing cases of storm water run off and flash flooding.
If 100mm of rain fell on Yarra Glen in just 24 hours, in order to prevent 2 million litres of rainfall from entering stormwater systems, it would require just 100 homes armed with rainwater tanks and suitable guttering.
Bushfire preparation
Australia is famous around the world for its long hot summers, and outside of the uninhabitable Antarctica, is the driest continent on the planet. Pairing this with the way many Australian plants behave, much of Victoria is susceptible to large scale wildfires.
Along with having a bushfire action plan, an important way to prepare for the dry summer months is to ensure that you have adequate water storage to help safeguard you from the threat of fire, and a Pioneer Water Tank helps provide that protection.
Pioneer Water Tanks offers the option of a fire reserve in your tank, to ensure it can be used for both domestic water storage and fire protection.
Outperforming all comers in bushfire conditions
The CSIRO performed bushfire simulation tests on water tanks in collaboration with the Bushfire and National Hazards CRC, and the results showed that a steel Pioneer Water Tank held up better than the competition.
All other tanks tested either melted or split, causing them to lose precious water, however the Pioneer Water Tank continued to hold water after being exposed to the full 30 minute fire front, which could prove essential to fire fighting efforts.
After a fire front has gone by, the water in your tank can still be used for non-consumptive purposes, like watering your gardens, however, it is highly recommended to get your water tested as soon as possible to make sure that your water is safe before using it for food preparation or drinking.

Yarra Glen Local Insight
Local knowledge
Prior to the arrival of Europeans the Yarra Valley was known as Billanook to the Wurundjeri Aborigines who lived in the area. European settlement began in the late 1830s after Robert Hoddle surveyed the area.
The town was originally known as Yarra Flats but when the railway arrived in 1889 a number of places - the railway station, the post office and the school - all changed their names to Yarra Glen. The term "Yarra" was given to the river by John Helder Wedge of the Port Phillip Association. He thought, incorrectly, that it was a Wurundjeri term for "river".
Things to do in Yarra Glen
Located at the heart of Yarra Glen, and clearly the town's most impressive building, is the Grand Hotel. Built in 1888, during the boom period, this two-storey stuccoed hotel has a four-storey tower at one end, a masonry arcade along the street frontage, a cast-iron veranda and a parapet.
In areas like the Yarra Valley, where there are dozens of cellar doors, if you are a wine person; you'll be in your element. Find a guide to the area's wineries and taste your way through the region.
